A fire assay crucible is used as a reaction vessel during the fusion stage of precious metal fire assay analysis, where ore samples are heated with fluxes and lead oxide to melt the metals and form a lead button containing the precious metals. The crucible's high-temperature resistance and mechanical strength allow it to contain the molten mixture, withstand thermal shocks, and resist attack from molten materials, effectively separating precious metals from waste. 

Crucible clay, particularly fire clay and clay-graphite mixes, is used primarily to create crucibles, which are high-temperature containers for melting, casting, and smelting metals like gold, silver, and aluminum. They also find use in laboratories for sample preparation, the production of glass and pottery, separating precious metals from ore, and in refractory material production.
